Mr. Soul

My mothers name is CORRINE.

She always called me “MR. SOUL”

One of the first places CORRINE ever took me was to the Apollo theatre to see James Brown.

From that moment on I was hooked and starting at the age of ten years old CORRINE would let me go to the Apollo theatre by myself every Saturday and stay all day long watching the greatest entertainers this world has ever seen.

CORRINE brought me red pants and Black patent leather boots back when little boys didn’t wear things like that.

When church members asked CORRINE if she’d taken leave of her senses CORRINE told them, “…he’s going to be an entertainer and that’s what entertainers wear…”.

CORRINE purchased 45 records and albums for me that I still have to this very day.

CORRINE always told me to smell good….to dress my very best….and to love and respect all women.

CORRINE instilled in me that my dark skin and my nappy hair should in no way impede my progress and my development as a man but instead be used as fuel to make me give 110 %.

CORRINE also threatened to beat the “..Black off of me…” and to kick my ass “…from now until the cows come home and Moses gets back on the throne…” if I kept messing up in school.

On September 9th, 1994 at 3:30 am CORRINE went to heaven to kiss my father again and catch up with my grandparents.

A few weeks after that I went to see Wilson Pickett at Tramps nightclub in NYC.

Wilson Pickett pulled me up onstage to sing with him and I poured my heart and soul into the song – Wilson actually grabbed the microphone from me and told me that he was in danger of losing his job to me and to get off the stage!

A few nights later CORRINE woke me up in the middle of the night calling my name – “…MR. SOUL!…MR. SOUL!!!…”- she appeared to me and she let me know that she saw me onstage with Wilson Pickett and that she was quite proud of me.

Ma….I have an album out now and I named it after the building in which you raised me. I hope you love it!

ALL THAT I AM I OWE TO MY MOTHER.

Everyday is Happy Mothers Day to me.

I LOVE AND ADORE THAT LADY.

My dear sainted mother Corrine and I.
